Directed by Wagner de Assis, the movie The Astral City is a perfect adaptation of the book "Nosso Lar" ("Our Home" in English) which is one of the most important books written by Chico Xavier, Brazil's most beloved medium and possibly the most famous psychic of the world.
The book was psychographed, that is, authored by a spiritual entity named André Luiz who used Chico Xavier's body to write the book. The Astral City was read by over 16 million people since it was first published in 1944 and remains one of the precious gems of the spiritist literature.
In the movie The Astral City, André Luiz is also the main character. He tells the story of a place where people go after death and teaches lessons about love, peace and forgiveness.
The Astral City – Main Plot
André Luiz (Renato Prieto) wakes up in a terrible place after dying during a surgery. He soon realizes that he is dead but cannot understand why he is in such a bad place. Haunted by terrible images and feelings, he starts to beg for help. This is when he is rescued by a group of workers who take him to the Astral City, a beautiful place in the spiritual realm that shelters people who died.
In the Astral City there are hospitals, schools, houses, buses, music and everything else a regular city has, only much modern and much more beautiful. There, André Luiz learns that the place a person goes after death depends on the thoughts, emotions and feelings that he or she cultivated during life, and that the afterlife is simply a consequence of one's actions.
Anxious to obtain permission to visit his family on Earth, André Luiz starts to help at the hospital, assisting those who had violent or traumatic deaths. Little by little he starts to understand the rules and laws that pervade the process of life after death and learns that sooner or later, everybody needs to reborn in the physical world through reincarnation.
The Astral City – Film Review
The plot of the movie isn't special. In fact, there really is no plot as the movie basically explains the concept of life after death and reincarnation from the perspective of Allan Kardec's Spiritism. There is no brilliant acting either, however, the movie does justice to the book and displays a beautiful scenario. It is indeed a good option for those interested in knowing more about spirituality and reincarnation.
For those who are familiar with Spiritism, it may be easier to understand the whole concept of the film, but if you have never heard of Spiritism before, fear not. The book The Astral City can be read online for free. You may also want to read articles about Allan Kardec's Spiritism and Chico Xavier.
